Feed Me!
Last week we gave Orion his first food. It was a wonderful deliciously gross avocado mess.
Steve and I had noticed that Orion was getting jealous of those of us who eat with forks and spoons, and since he was on the brink of six months old, we decided it was time to gas up the airplane spoon.

The first day of feeding Orion did not go so gracefully. I know that all babies make a giant mess the first time they eat, but this poor guy has been coping with that nasty congestion that half of the east coast has been plagued with. There was a lot of gagging and heaving involved as Orion tried to master the whole chew (or gum since he’s toofless) swallow, breathe stunt. After a few bites and lots of spit up, Orion said, “Enough already! I want to nurse!”
The next day when it was time to feed Orion, I was prepared for more gagging and heaving and frustrated temper fits. I was armed with wipes, burp cloths, a bottle and an extra bib. I was expecting a protest from the little man.
What did I just let you do to me!?
I was so wrong! As soon as Orion saw the spoon and bowl of avocado he started kicking with excitement, and as the first spoonful approached him, he leaned forward and gobbled it up. He looked like a little turtle reaching its head out and snatching up a bite of food. So stinking cute!
Nom Nom Nom…Hey! This stuff is pretty awesome!
Orion loves his avocado! Next up, sweet potatoes.
I know some of you out there make your own baby food, so if you have suggestions, recipes or resources I would love to hear all about them!

Awesome, I would do sweet potatoes, yogurt, add some rice cereal to it, bananas, the kids were not such big fans of peas, but carrots they liked, acorn squash, I have homemade chicken noodle soup and throw it in the blender, I make quite a bit and put it in little containers and then freeze it. LJ has no teeth either, we have not tried baby food yet with him. Glad Orion liked it.
I like the chicken noodle soup idea! I’ll have to remember that when I make soup again
Avocado and sweet potatoes are by far some of the easier baby food items to make. Peas are also fairly simple to just puree and go. Mash the bananas on your own. If you want to make apples, they’re also simple enough to cook down, puree, and turn into homemade applesauce. It’s actually a lot of fun to make baby food, and it’s a whole lot cheaper, too. Plus? No added preservatives!
No additives and cost savings are huge pluses.
There is a site I like- I think it is called wholesome baby food… anyway it has a lot of great info on making and storing baby food
I make all my own baby food, and it’s pretty easy. Just cook the veggie/fruit until it’s soft and then puree in the blender. Add some water if necessary. Then put it in ice cube trays and freeze. Once they’re frozen you can pop them out and put in a baggie in the freezer. Presto! Perfect baby-sized portions. Butternut squash seems to be Piper’s favorite so far. Good luck!
Ah! Renee, he is so darn cute! My lil man is already super jealous of us food eaters, we think. He watches everyone eat and I feel so bad! But, he’s only 3 months old, so gotta wait a lttle longer. *sigh*
