Old School Art Work Becomes New Art

Framed Art Work 003

What do you do with all of the art work you saved from when your children were little? If you are my mom, you recruit troops and turn it into another art project.

My mom saved every little art project my brothers and I ever made. Every. Single. Piece. In fact, she saves just about everything and anything that can be considered sentimental. I do not share this trait with my mom. In fact, just last night I went through a stack of old cards and college things (ticket stubs, bar napkins, etc) and threw most of it away. My mom would have died and said things like, “Don’t you want to save this so you can remember the fun you had in college? Aren’t these things important to you?” She would have thought my heart had turned to stone.

Anyhow… So, like I was saying, my mom saved every single piece of art work from our childhood. She kept it in a flattened box that she called the ‘artfolio” or something cheesy like that. When I went home a few weeks ago over the Fourth of July, Mom had a plan for this art work.

She wanted to take all of this old art work of ours, frame it and arrange it over her bed in a collage. She also wanted Moanna and I to pick out pieces to frame and take back home with us. So… that’s what we did.

We ventured to Goodwill and bought nearly every frame they had in stock. We probably ended up with close to 50 frames for about $35.00. Then we bought a bunch of black spray paint so they would all match.

After what seemed like forever, we returned to the house to arrange the frames and pick out which pieces of art would go in which frames.

Here…

No here…

Maybe here…

Nope. This is it…

We took pictures (as evidenced by the pictures you see here) so that we would remember where everything went.

Then we had to take a break for a few days because there was more on the agenda than spending the whole week on this project. We picked back up on our project the night before I left town. Since we were running short on time, we moved ahead to painting, matting and framing the pictures I would be taking home to Georgia. Mom will be finishing her headboard of pictures in the near future.

The three pictures on the left journied back to Georgia with Moanna and I. The two on the left are my creations. The one to the right of those I brought back to Georgia for Josh. The art work on the far right was done by my youngest brother Evan, and that will be displayed in his room in Virginia. We also brought back a college of paintings and contstruction paper projects that Moanna picked out for her room. I didn’t get a picture of that one yet.

THE ART WORK LOOKS VERY GOOD FRAMED. I THINK IT WAS A NEAT THING TO DO WITH KIDS ART PROJECTS. SERVES THE PURPOSE OF KEEPSAKES AND ART FOR THE WALL.
