Easy Dye Easter Eggs

Easter Eggs 060

I have been making Easter eggs this way since I was a young cookie. Over the years I’ve tried many other methods, but this by far is the best. They are the easiest, funnest, cheapest Easter eggs ever.

I have no idea where my Mom came up with this, but it’s brilliant. She called them tie dyed Easter eggs, but that’s because she’s a hippie. You can call them rolled Easter eggs, paper towel Easter eggs, speckled Easter eggs or the best Easter eggs ever. Any name will do.

These Easter eggs require no kits, no vinegar, no cups of dye waiting to be dumped all over the place, no waiting for eggs to dry, no flimsy egg tongs dropping and cracking eggs, no paint brushes, no glitter, no plopping eggs in cups and waiting impatiently for them to turn colors.

Instead these  Easter eggs use things you have on hand at home, they dry instantly, they are hands on from start to finish, the mess is minimal and they are super fun for the whole gang. We did these with Moanna her first Easter when she was about ten months old and she loved it. Yesterday, Josh got into the Easter eggs and he’s 21. You can’t go wrong with these.

What you’ll need…

Eggs (duh)
Food Coloring
Paper Towels
Water (we used a spray bottle, but  it’s not necessary)
**If you are Easter egging it up on a surface that stains, you will want some newspaper or something else to cover the surface. We did our eggs on the glass patio table, so no protection needed. If you don’t want to scrub colorful fingers when your’re done, you may want some rubber gloves. We didn’t do the gloves – we enjoy the mess.

1st. Fold a paper towel in half of quarters.

2nd. Place a few drops of food coloring on the paper towel. Any colors and any combination of colors works.

3rd. If you want more of a water color effect, dampen the paper towel. If you prefer a textured eggs, skip the water.

4th. Take an egg and roll it around on the paper towel. Roll it as much or as little as you’d like.

5th. Put it back in the egg crate. They dry instantly.

6th. Time for the next egg.

7th. Continue until all of your eggs are little works of art.

8th. Have an impromptu Easter egg hunt immediately following.

**You can use the same paper towel for a few eggs. The colors will evolve with each egg that is rolled on it. We like doing one textured egg, and then spraying the paper towel for a water colored egg. Then we would move onto a new paper towel and new color combination.

See? Super easy and super fun!

Our palate.

Naturally Moanna’s first egg had to be pink and purple.

Planning my first egg while Moanna is well on her way with her third Easter egg.

Rollin’, Rollin’, Rollin’

Note the 21 year old in the back ground.

Cool Idea. We were dripping dye on and blowing on it with straws, but your way makes an even cooler effect. http://dadand.com/2011/04/18/the-best-part-of-easter/

Thanks for the tip and thanks to your mom for the idea. I’ve got a 2 1/2 year old coming Sunday and just remembered to get him an Easter gift today…duh! Didn’t get any candy cuz I was afraid he’d choke on everything I saw. Forgot all about dyeing eggs I can hide for him to find!

Great to see you having fun with the tye-dye eggs. There are lots of variations possible. The primary goal was muticolored eggs w/ minimal mess. It takes the scary out of egg coloring!!!
