Occupational Hazards
Before you read this post, you should be warned that what is under that bandage is very grody and disturbing…
If blood and sliced skin is not your thing, don’t scroll down…
What lies beneath here is very CSI, Dexter or something bizarre you might see on the Discovery Channel…
If a drop of blood makes you go pale and fall on the floor, I suggest you switch to a site that features kittens and ducklings…
This is your final warning…
I can not be held responsible if you throw up your breakfast or faint at your desk in front of coworkers…

That was a test picture…
Maybe a little background will help you decide…
Over the weekend Steve was working out of town. It was the first time this year that he’s had to work away from home. By the last day, I was getting really antsy for him to come home. When I get antsy, I have a habit of calling and texting to get status updates. I hadn’t heard from him in a while, so I called him. He answered, “Hey. I’m at a client’s house, but I thought I should answer because I’m dying.”… “You’re dying?”… “Yeah. You remember the last time I cut myself? Well this is like 50 times worse. Thankfully, these people own a construction business, so they know how to deal with this kind of thing. I’ll talk to you later.”
That night he got home after I was already in bed, so I didn’t have the pleasure of seeing his flesh wound until the next morning when we had to redress it. Now, any other time, I would be all, “Give me that thumb! Let’s poke at it, and see if we can make it bleed again before we clean it and make it all pretty.” At the moment, my gag reflexes are in over drive, so other than emotional support and documenting this glorious occassion, I was not much help. Steve had to single handedly clean and redress his thumb.
I’m serious this time. Gross things lie below…

I told you it was pretty gnarly.

So gross.

I don’t know how he gets himself into these messes.

The peroxide was fun. Once Steve started cleaning the thumb, he started to go a little post traumatic. To bring him back to the present, I fetched him a Coke. I thought it would be a good idea (as in cruel and hilarious) to see what would happen if we poured Coke on the open cut. Steve was not at all interested in partaking in my science experiment.

Steve had to do some rearranging to put the skin back in place.
Once everything was clean and in its proper place, Steve coated it with a liquid bandage, wrapped it up in a few more bandages and then taped it down for extra security. We have seen improvements over the past few days. Steve said it is clear that some nerves are dead. It’s also very clear that some nerves are still alive because the explicits that come flying out of his mouth when he puts to much pressure on his thumb.
Next week’s lesson – How to set and stabilize a broken leg with leftover 2×4′s, old sheets and hopefully some Coke.
JUST KIDDING!
Prev Post -> Not the Princess and the Pea

I guess Steve has never heard about going to an Urgent Care or an ER for wound care????? (Would have been under a work injury). Here’s to quick healing!
Hospitals are for sissies – Just Kidding! Independent contractors don’t get workman’s comp. He had a full day scheduled and didn’t want to push it back and delay his return home.
I tore the tip of my finger off once while laying a laminate floor. There was no way I was going to get it sewn back on either. I just taped the chunk of hanging flesh back down where it belonged, wrapped it up and when it stopped throbbing….finished the job. It healed up just fine. I can feel a slight numbness but even stitches wouldn’t have prevented that. As long as no infection sets in, Steve’s finger will heal as well as it would if he’d gone to the doctor.
His last cut healed pretty well, minus a few dead nerve endings. We (as in he) clean it every night. So far it’s clearing up well.
Nee, do you remember when I was doing my Cutco training in Roanoke and nearly sliced off the top of my left thumb?! Well, I just replayed that day in my head after seeing these pictures! I do remember the doctor saying “Well, that must be a da** good knife because that’s one of the cleanest cuts I’ve seen come in here – straight to the bone!” Hahah! Thanks again for taking me to the hospital and staying with me through the event!
Hahaha! That was a day!
Oh, pretty bad but I know he can handle it and it will heal just fine. Ask him how many times his mother has cut herself, taken chunks out of, and/or nearly cut off her fingers (yes that’s plural as I do not think I have a single finger that has not become a victim to CUTCO). Keep it clean and NO WHINING
I got a gross cut once from a spatula spreader of all things.
Aw, sorry Stevo got hurt. I’ve found that fast dry superglue works wonders. I believe in it with all my heart.
That’s a good idea! If we run out of New Skin, I’ll try out the super glue.
Any sign of infection though and it’s straight to the doctor……( I actually thought of Sarah’s Cutco cut too); but seriously, you really need to keep that thumb forever so……..
So far neither thumb has fallen off…
As long as your thumb is still there it isn’t much of a cut!!!!!
Hahaha! You’re right. He needs to suck it up and get over it.
those are serious knives! i sliced my finger on a cutco knife and ended up with 6 stitches.
Anika! Oh my goodness you poor thing.
Well Steven the thumb is still intack so the cut can’t be to bad…
