“I Can’t Stand the Rain”

Rainy day 001

“I can’t stand the rain…” Beautiful song. However, rain and sweet memories do not belong in the same sentence in my world. In my world, rain and sweet misery are more like it.

Despite the opening lines of this post, I’m in a lighthearted mood. I just need my sunshine to come back. Last weekend was a total tease. It was warm and sunny, and ever since then it’s been cold, damp and rainy. Dislike!

I’m not one of those people that can throw on their rain boots and truck through their day like it’s nothing. I wish I could be one of those people, but I never have been and even though I try really hard, I doubt I ever will be. When it rains, I curl up inside myself. I stay in my jammie clothes and plant myself on the couch and try to stay warm. I might do laundry because it’s a warm task, and I might cook something because the kitchen gets nice and cozy. Other than that, I’m useless. If there is something I have to do, like have to do, it takes a lot of motivation and pep talk for me to leave the house.

Today the rain is keeping me from…

Mopping the kitchen floor. If I mop when it’s raining, we will all starve to death waiting for the floor to dry.

Cleaning the bathrooms. I can’t air out the bathmats when it’s raining, or open the bathroom windows to let the cleaning chemical smells out.

Running errands. In and out of the car all day long in the rain is pure torture. There is no chance of being dry and warm when you run errands on a rainy day.

Grocery shopping. This is an errand, but it’s a particularly difficult errand, and requires a lot of time in the rain loading and unloading groceries. Then all the wet bags come into the house and then the house is wet.

Getting off the couch. When it’s wet and cold outside, the safest place for me is on the couch. It’s warm here on the couch. I can surround myself with books, movies, writing, magazines, travel websites, social media, etc and transport myself to a warm and sunny place.

… Now if you’ll excuse me, the royal princess has requested cheese and a peanut butter spoon for a snack.

I have to say that all my years of laughing at those spontaneous rain storms in Florida have come back to haunt me. I scoffed. The “sunshine state”? HAH! Oh, how foolish I was — it was sunny more in Florida than it’s been here in Georgia. The cloudy, dreary weather has started to take a toll on me.

I’m with you Meredith. I was excited to move to the South where it was milder. I had NO idea it rained this much and was cloudy this often down here. I’m counting down the days until Spring arrives so that at least it will be warmer when it’s raining

Your rationalizations are rock solid! I have done my job well…
