About that Date

Friday, Steve and I had a Date Day. Remember I mentioned it here during intermission?

The second half of Date Day went something like this…

We decided to go to Rosa Mexicano for dinner in Atlantic Station. We forgot to get the address before we left the house, so I looked it up on my phone in the car (Steve was driving. I do NOT support playing with electronics and driving). Not only did I find the address, but I was able to make a reservation directly from my phone, no phone call required, just a few tipity tapitdies on the keyboard and it was done. It was the coolest thing ever! I know to you savvy app lovers this is old news, but to me this is a whole new world. Hey, I just learned a few months ago that you could make reservations on the internet for a restaurant. Anyhow, my reservation via my phone saved us 45 minutes of waiting inline for a table.

To start, we had guacamole. They made fresh guacamole at our table. They wheeled out this cart full of guacamole fixin’s and went to town. It was expensive, but totally worth it! I am very passionate about avocados and guacamole, and this is up there as some of the best guac I’ve ever had.

We decided to share an entrée, and it is a good thing we did because the one entrée we got was enough to feed three people. We got the Tequila and Chile Braised Lamb Shank. I’m not joking when I say, Steve picked up the lamb and it fell completely off the bone. We’re talking melt in your mouth meat. It also came with a huge bowl of rice, black beans and goodies to make tacos. We also got a side of plantains because we love plantains. Look at all of this food!

Rosa Mexicano’s was amazing! Outside of the delicious Thanksgiving food I had over the holiday, it was the best food I’ve had in a long time. It is expensive for Mexican food, but I promise you this is not what you are used to when you go to a Mexican restaurant. Something else worth noting is that there are a lot of gluten free items on the menu. Steve and I were able to share everything we ordered, and it has been a very long time (before he was diagnosed) since we were able to share food at a restaurant. If there is a Rosa Mexicano in your area, I highly recommend it, especially if you you are looking for gluten free options.

Oh, and check out this cool water fountain they had.

After we stuffed ourselves to the point of popping, we went ice skating in Centennial Olympic Park. We’ve lived in Atlanta for four months now, and had never been to Olympic Park until Date Day. That is probably a criminal offense! When I brought the idea of ice skating up to Steve, we were both excited about it and admitted that we had only been ice skating a few times in the past and that we were both terrible at it. However, HOW-EV-ER, when we got on the ice Steve went gliding around the rink forwards and backwards and spinning all over the place. Meanwhile, I was glued to the side rail screaming for my life to end. OK, it wasn’t that dramatic, but you get the idea. I’m OK with falling on the ice, but every time I’ve gone ice skating (the whole four times I’ve gone), I have been petrified of falling on the ice and someone skating over my fingers and slicing them off. Falling not bad. Loosing fingers in freak ice skating accident very not cool.

With some coaching and Steve pulling me along, I was able to make it around the rink a few times before braving it on my own. I survived, but I got no where fast. It was a lot like driving in Atlanta traffic. People are plowing you over, cutting you off, hanging out in your blind spots, honking and pushing you out of the way. Nerve wracking. Every few laps, I had to take a break and visit my sturdy and stable friend the rail. While I caught my breath and calmed my nerves, Steve would skate a few laps at lightening speed. Then he would pick me up and poke along with me as I shuffled along.

To end our Date Day, I made Steve take me to The Varsity for dessert – another landmark of the city that we hadn’t taken the time to visit until now. Steve had an itty-bitty milkshake, and I had a fried peach pie and an itty-bitty Coke.

My husband called me a tourist for taking pictures of the iconic sign, and then took incriminating pictures of me and my peach pie. Rude!

I am a big fan of Date Days, and this is one of the best ones we’ve had.

Wow, your date night was awesome! I’d like to plan one like that with my hubby, but in Lexington there’s not much to do that already hasn’t been done…
