The Bathroom – My Favorite Room to Clean

Bathrooms are really gross. They can be really stinky too. People do gross stuff in there. Who would want to clean the bathroom? Me! I love cleaning the bathroom. It is my favorite room in the house to clean. Don’t click the close button yet. Let me explain first, and then make your judgments. If you stick around long enough before casting me off as crazy, I will tell you how I clean the bathroom too.
Reason 1 I love cleaning the bathroom: I know that bathrooms can be gross, and that we do gross stuff in there. However, that is also where we go to get clean and beautiful. I don’t know about you, but I can’t feel clean and beautiful if the bathroom I’m supposed to get clean and beautiful in is dirty. I need my bathroom to be clean.
Reason 2 I love cleaning the bathroom: If you have a huge bathroom, then I’m jealous. My bathrooms are small. Not tiny, but they are the smallest rooms in my house. I’m guessing your bathrooms are similar. Since bathrooms are so small, there is only so much surface area that can get dirty and there is only so much room for clutter to pile up. Therefore, it can only take so long before the bathroom is sparkling clean. Within ten minutes to half an hour (depending on how serious I’m cleaning) my bathroom is clean and I have instant gratification which gives me the motivation to keep cleaning.
Reason 3 I love cleaning the bathroom: Out of all the rooms in the house, I get the most satisfaction from cleaning the bathroom. The before and after is dramatic. This is similar to Reason 2. When you walk into a dirty bathroom, you can see the dirt. Toothpaste is on the mirror, there is pee under the toilet seat. Gross. But, but! As soon as you clean the mirror and wipe down the toilet, the dirt is gone and everything shines. It’s not that quick and easy to get the rest of the house to shine, at least not for me. In other rooms in the house, I have to first put everything away. Then, I have to move all the pictures and decorations out of the way. Then I can dust the end table. After that, I have to dust the pictures and such and put them back where they go. Then, after all of that, I can finally see progress.
Reason 4 I love cleaning the bathroom: I have been cleaning bathrooms forever. Maybe not as long as some of you out there, but I began scrubbing the bathtub at a very young age. Often I would clean the bathroom out of boredom multiple times a week. Through all of this practice, I have gotten cleaning the bathroom down to a science. It’s the same every time. There is very little to think about. While I clean the bathroom I can pray, sing, create stories in my head, think about other things that I don’t have time to think about and so on. It’s kind of like meditation for me, only it’s productive meditation.
So you see, I have good reason to love cleaning the bathroom. In fact, I have four reasons to love cleaning the bathroom. Do you still want to close the window and cast me off as crazy?

You want to know what my bathroom cleaning ritual is?
It’s very simple.
1. It must be a sunny day.
2. I pour toilet cleaner in the toilet to soak while I do other things.
3. I take the bathmats and toys outside to sit in the sun and air out. Every few weeks, I wash the bathmats and shower curtains in the washing machine and put the bath toys in the dishwasher.
4. I take all of the shampoo, soap etc out of the bathtub and off the kitchen counter and set them on the floor.
5. I spray down the bathtub, sink, counter and toilet with an all purpose cleaner and let them sit for a minute.
6. While the cleaner is sitting for a minute, I dust the windowsill and blind. Then I dust the wrack that holds our towels and magazines.
7. I wipe down and rinse out the bathtub. I don’t have to scrub much because I clean the bathrooms often.
8. I wipe down and rinse the sink and counter.
9. I turn off the bathroom light so the light bulbs and mirror will cool off. This is very important
10. I clean the toilet bowl inside and out and flush.
11. By now the light bulbs are cool and I can dust those.
12. Then I clean the mirror. If you clean the mirror with the lights on, the heat from the light evaporates the cleaner before you have time to clean, leaving streaks.
13. I wipe down the shampoo, soap etc and return them to the bathtub and counter.
14. I sweep the floor and mop.
15. Later in the day, after they have had plenty of time to air out and sunbathe, I bring the bathmats and toys back in and put them where they belong.
See? Very simple.
Now you can close the window and go clean your bathroom.
Prev Post -> Hello December

When I first read your tweet, I wasn’t sure what to expect from your post but everything you said about cleaning the bathroom made total sense to me!
I’m also not blessed with large bathrooms and ours can get pretty cluttered with “product” , toys and other random things that get left in there by a certain preschooler who shall remain nameless. Those are all the reasons I hate cleaning the bathroom, but I guess if I look at it your way I can maybe change my mindset to make it less annoying! =)
Love the routine too and that you have one at all! A system makes everything easier!
I have a toddler too that leaves stuff in the bathroom. She is calls it “decorating.” It’s cute, but it drives me crazy sometimes. I get a small bucket and throw all of the “decorating” in it to get it out of my way. When I’m done, I will go sort out the bucket and put stuff where it goes.
Want to come clean my bathrooms? I HATE cleaning bathrooms, ESPECIALLY the toilets.
I’d be happy too!
I bet you could make a lot of money cleaning bathrooms…..lol! Most people hate to do it…I know that I do but that’s because of my oversided bathroom and all the WHITE tile and grout.
Over sized bathroom? I’m jealous. I wonder what kind of market there is for someone to clean just bathrooms? Hmmm… Wonder how much I could charge per bathroom…
Wonderful!!!!! I have just added that to your “to do list” while you are here for the holidays as I am so happy my daughter-in-law loves the job I hate the worse. Bring your gloves…LOL.
Gloves are packed!
i’m with you–carpets never seem clean to me! but a mirror, sink, a floor you can mop-it’s good. plus i love you routine! that’s great:)
The routine is key!
