The Most Amazing Food I’ve Ever Eaten…

Congratulations Julie L! Julie was randomly selected as the winner of the CUTCO giveaway. Julie said, “The most amazing food I have eaten was my husband’s grandmother’s roast beef with gravy and potatoes with homemade rolls.”

Thank you all so much for sharing the most amazing food you’ve ever eaten with me. I feel like I need to travel the world to far away lands and beat down the doors of your relatives to eat this delectable food you speak of.

I was impressed with how diverse the list of amazing food was. The foods came from all over the world and ranged from gourmet to home cooked. There were foods that took hours of preparation, and foods as simple as a freshly picked mango. There were desserts and savory foods. Foods from the US and food from abroad like Paraguay and Japan. The foods included memories of birthdays far from home and holiday meals surrounded by family.

I have been thinking all week long about the most amazing food I’ve ever eaten, and it has been a major struggle pinpointing one thing. I have been dwelling on finishing this sentence all week, and depending on my mood, my answer changes. Sometimes I think about the food itself, and other times I think about the memory of a meal, the people, the occasion, the setting. I feel like I am forgetting the most amazing good I’ve ever eaten. I am convinced that a month from now I will sit up in bed and go, “I can’t believe I forgot that meal! I was the most amazing good EVER!” I grew up surrounded by great home cooks, and have worked with some amazing chefs. I’ve eaten in some fantastic restaurants that range from food carts to gourmet. It’s feels impossible to commit to one thing. However, you shared a very intimate part of your life with me (I do believe food is an intimate part of our beings), and so it is only fair that I do the same.

I know I will get cold feet, and change my mind in five minutes, but here goes. My senior year of high school I went to Hawaii with one of my best friends (I call her Jodi) and her family. Hawaii quickly became on of my favorite places. There is no other place like it; I could write novels about the short week I spent there. We were there, we ate a lot of food that I will never forget. While we were in Hawaii, Jodi was accepted to a college in Texas and we went out for a celebratory dinner. I’m not even sure if I have the right restaurant, but I think it was Crouching Lion Inn. I feel like the inside was decorated with what to look like old windmill parts, and we sat in big tall wicker seats that hugged around us. I had shrimp for dinner (this was before I realized I had an allergy to shellfish), and it was quite yummy. However, it wasn’t until dessert that I began to question if I was still on earth or if I had made it to heaven without realizing. For dessert we had banana cream pie, and we were all in a euphoric state with the first bite. It was so rich and creamy, but at the same time so light and refreshing. I swear the bananas were so fresh they had to have been picked that morning from a tree behind the restaurant. I’m not much of a fan of bananas or cream pies, but oh-my-goodness-gracious-golly-gee was that pie to die for. I have been chasing after the high of that pie for seven years now. No pie or banana has come close to recreating that moment of culinary ecstasy.

Thank you all again for helping my blog grow and for sharing the most amazing food you’ve ever eaten with me! If you didn’t have a chance to share your most amazing food, or you have a second place runner up that you want to give a shout-out to, I would love to hear it.

I love that the simple, home prepared meals are such a favorite with most people rather than the high-dollar dishes that are so sparse you leave hungry after paying over $100 for it…because it was served with dots and curls in some restaurant owned by a famous chef who has never actually cooked there. I no longer enjoy “going out”, really. My favorite meals are the pot lucks we often have for get togethers with friends. If I knew how to raise chickens the way your dad’s mom did…I’d have me one great restaurant up here though!

Did I forget that part last time? Hmm. Well, I think I know the most amazing thing I’ve ever eaten — at least, this is what jumped to the forefront of my mind right now. At my prom, there was this rich, moist, velvety chocolate cake. It was a thick wedge of the most glorious chocolate cake I’ve ever had the pleasure of devouring. It must have had a chocolate ganache frosting because it was thick, rich, and fudgy. The chocolaty layers just left such an impression on me that it’s probably good that I didn’t have a date — that cake overshadowed pretty much everything else, just because it was that good. I attempted to get the recipe out of the pastry chef, but he tried to convince me it was just a “regular” chocolate cake. Either it was a prized secret or he needed more self-confidence. So far, I’ve only come slightly close to duplicating that delicious, luscious texture.
