Progress

Folks, we are making progress! I have proof.

Moanna’s Room – Notice the pink. We have finally converted Mo’s crib into a toddler bed – no railing! Moanna and I put all of her books on her shelf, put her lamp together, and hung up these cute butterflies. I spent a good half an hour trying to hang up these butterflies, and they still are not spaced out evenly.

Moanna’s Bathroom/Guest Bathroom – Notice the pink. Despite my best efforts Moanna is obsessed with pink. I’m done fighting it, and have decided to embrace it. We have a pink rug, pink shower curtain, pink trash can, pink toothbrush holder, pink soap dispensers, pink, pink and more pink.

The Kitchen (left side) – Notice the bonsai tree; he made it here safely and I am happy to report has new leaves sprouting. You can’t see it from this picture, but every single cabinet is packed full. I’m talking to the brim. As you can see there is very little cabinet space and therefore very little counter space. Also, if you look above the fridge and squint, you can see plastic wrap and storage bags this is due to the fact that I have a total of 3 (THREE) drawer in my kitchen.

The Kitchen (right side) – Notice the stove; it’s a gas stove and as of 8:00AM (we were woken up by the gas company pounding on our door to start our gas service) it works. Now, I just have to learn how to cook on the darn thing. Again, as you can see the counter, cabinet and drawer space is lacking.

The Pantry (the teeny-tiny pantry) – Notice that it’s full. This is not because I went out grocery shopping. This is the food that we brought with us from Virginia. We gave a good 75% of our pantry food away before we left VA, and I still have a tote full of baking supplies that I have no home for. When I opened this door, I almost cried. When I opened this door, I was 100% convinced that a bachelor who lives off of frozen dinners designed this kitchen. I was already 95% convinced by looking at the rest of the kitchen, but this pushed me over the edge. I can’t fit a weeks worth of groceries in here, and forget about long term food storage.

The Nook – Notice it’s empty. At first glance, this may not look like progress, but believe me it is. All of the stuff that now fills my cabinets used to be packed in boxes filling this nook. Since I have no counter space, no drawers and no storage, I need something to fill this space that will give me all three. We’ve looked at a few options, but so far nothing really jumps out at me. Any suggestions?

Three rooms down, we’re less than half way done. It’s fair to say that we’re less than 25% done. Stay tuned.

    A portable island! http://www.walmart.com/ip/Extra-Large-Kitchen-Cart-White-with-Stainless-Steel-Top/13241487?findingMethod=rr

They have tons of them. You could probably find one on Craigslist.

Oh I do like the portable island idea. That would look great there and give you counter AND storage :-) Good idea Lauren! It looks great Renee. I will have to come visit one day….maybe next summer when I got loads of time.

Oh how I miss the days of pink, don’t worry it may not last. My oldest used to love pink & dresses and now we are fighting about not buying any black school clothes. *lol* Oh the fun that lies ahead for you. Your new home is looking great!

I’m really hoping that dressing in all black is out by the time she gets there – I’m thinking that is wishful thinking.

Hey good job chica! Unpacking is all about consistent progress, usually I get really motivated get a majority done, and then crash so the rest never gets done. So slow and steady is a good method. I agree with everyone else that probably your best bet is going to be a large island, that way you can have drawers, counter space and cabinets. The only other thing that I could think of that probably wouldn’t look as great would be to get a larger table of some sort and then build open shelves underneath, you could always hide them with cute curtains under there or something. Also about the PINK. Believe it or not, I had an entirely pink room as a child, loved pink, and then moved on to purple. Then I hit my tom boy phase and refused to wear either. I still have trouble wearing them, so no worries, I think you’re right to embrace it at this point and realize it’s not a big deal. :)

If I had power tools, and skills, I may actually think about building something because I can’t find anything so far that feels quite right.

Oh gosh, the kitchen space… how about a lovely table that functions as a counter by those gorgeous windows? I’m certain the view outside should make up for the itty bitty kitchen.

Moanna’s room and bathroom look adorable. Great job on the progress — I was never that good at unpacking in a timely fashion.

Love the pink! Also love the suggestion for portable island and other storage ideas. Yes… doing food storage in an apartment is challenging. As for a gas stove…I prefer cooking on gas over electric any day! You never have to worry about burning something if you leave the pan on the burner! Keep up the great job on the progress!

This is the best part… It’s a house, not an apartment. It’s a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath with a garage and the kitchen is BITE SIZE! Everyone says that once they had a gas stove they never wanted to go electric again.

We had a table once with storage under it. It was like an island with a bigger top. It worked well for storage items that we only used occasionally but had to have…waffle iron, crockpot, dutch oven, rice cooker and the fancy cake plate. Mikaela also had benches that went with a kitchen booth type table that had storage in them. They were cool. I definitely like the island idea for the middle of the kitchen., especially if it is movable. Craigslist is a great idea.
It actually looks like fun. Wish I were there to help!
