Open This First

As you know, we’re moving… very soon in fact. One day, I will need face reality and start putting things in boxes; you know actually start packing. Until I move on from my state of denial, I am going to remain in the “planning phase.” The phase that allows me to research and make lists late into the night.

Based on my research and the advice of others, I am putting together an “open this first” box. You know, a box that contains essential items that you are going to want immediate access to in your new home. The box with the toilet paper in it.

I’ve been working on the list of things that should go into this box and after toilet paper I get kind of stuck.

So far I have the following…

Medicine

Toiletries (Toothbrush/paste, soap, deodorant, etc.)

First Aid kit

Disposable plates, cups, silverware

Paper Towels

Important documents

Snacks

Toilet Paper

Did you have an “open this first” box? If so, what was in it? What was something you really wish was in that box, but you forgot to put in the box?

**Please note: I have packed for medium sized boxes since I wrote the first paragraph of this post two days ago. However, I remain mostly in denial.

Usually anything I want to open first–toiletries, important mail that needs to be dealt with immediately, etc.–I put into a bag or backpack and take in my car with me, instead of boxing it up and putting onto the moving truck. That way I know exactly where it is and it is immediately accessible.

Anyway, your post is very timely. My husband and I are moving *next week* and we just started collecting boxes yesterday. :)

I didn’t think of putting bills in there… perhaps that says something about me? Hmmm…

Moving in ONE WEEK!? What brings on this new adventure and so quickly?

I agree that I would probably put it in a duffel bag in the car with you so you know exactly where it is. Last time I moved with movers, we didn’t get in until late and nothing was unpacked the next day because it was pouring rain. So I would have it with you. I would say bills, toiletries, toilet paper, several changes of clothes, snacks, med kit, paper towels, tissues, paper plates etc (unless you’re just planning on doing a little eating out at first), maybe 3 special toys that Mo is allowed to have with her?, and if you’re going to have your laptop with you maybe a DVD or two just chill out after a hard day of packing. I’ll let you know if I think of anything else :)

DVDs is a great idea!!! And, yeah, I guess a few toys for Mo would be nice… I guess helping to unload and unpack boxes gets old after awhile for a little tyke

I’ve never thought of that, but it sounds like a great idea. I’m going to have to remember that for the next time we have to move. Thanks for sharing that awesome idea!

I think the box is a great idea. I think I would add a wash cloth or two, and a hand towel, maybe even a bath towel for washing up after all the dirty sweaty moving.

Oh yes! Need to shower at some point, and dripping dry doesn’t sound like much fun

I think we did a bag, backpack or small box for EACH PERSON with snacks, wet wipes, a simple change of clothes (that could be slept in if necessary) toiletries, personal medicine, necessary papers (depending on who you are it could be coloring books or bills, leases, birth certificates, passports, etc.), and a long, interesting book to keep your mind busy while you wait (for papers to be signed, for the traffic to clear, for the realtor to find the key, you know all those really annoying delays that make you crazy when you just want to get it over).

Coloring books are absolutely necessary papers! Maybe even more important than the bills…

Let me know what we can do to help!

Everyone keeps offering to help, but I have no idea what to have them help with! I know there is a ton to do, but I get stuck when someone goes “What can we help with?” … “Ummm…”

You know what we would be really great though? Some pork and rice sometime next week!
